”It is unethical to slap a suspect” EFCC Investigator tells Court.

 
Sini Omar John, a Superintendent of Police, hooked up to the Financial and Monetary Crimes Fee, EFCC, on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, advised Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal Excessive Court, sitting in Maitama, Abuja, that the Fee’s investigators don’t slap suspects neither do they compel them to make statements underneath duress.

John testified as a prosecution witness in a trial inside trial, involving one Mohammed Sanni Zubair, a member of a syndicate, who specialised in defrauding individuals.

Zubair is being prosecuted by the EFCC on 4-count cost of fraud.

The defendant and his syndicate, allegedly defrauded one Main Basic Geoffrey Ejiga of over N180million.

Recall that on October 26, 2018, when the trial began, the prosecution counsel, Fatsuma Mohammed, sought to tender the defendant’s confessional assertion in proof, via the primary prosecution witness, Nasiru Amina Shehu, an EFCC detective.

The admissibility of the doc was objected to by the defence counsel, Joe Agi, SAN, on the bottom that the defendant was slapped and made to make the assertion underneath duress. The matter was thereafter adjourned to October 31, 2018, for trial inside trial, to decide if the assertion was made underneath duress.

The witness additional advised the court docket that the unbiased officer who endorsed the assertion, SP Yahaya Abdulkadir, requested the defendnat if he made his assertion voluntarily and he responded within the affirmative.

“My lord, it is not true that I slapped the defendant. This is as a result of, it is unethical and as a senior investigator, i ought to lead by instance. While he was with the unbiased officer, he was requested if his assertion was made voluntarily, he stated sure”, the witness stated.

The matter was thereafter adjourned to November 12, 2018, for continuation of trial inside trial.
