Residents of Ifira community in Akoko Southeast Local Government Area of Ondo State were in pensive mood yesterday following the death of a timber contractor, Aluko Ramoni, by a thunderbolt on a farm.

The deceased was said to be cutting an Iroko tree when death struck.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Isua-Akoko, Mr Biodun Ojediran, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said two people went to a farm at Ifira, Akoko, when the incident happened.

He said only Aluko died, adding that investigation had begun into the incident.

Sources said residents of Ifira contacted Sango (the Yoruba god of thunder) worshipers as it was a taboo to touch the body of such a person by non-adherents of the deity.

It was learnt that the victim hailed from Supare in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area but sojourned in Ifira where he ran his timber business.

The Sango worshipers reportedly carried the body to Supare, where burial rites were said to have led to a controversy over whether to bury him at home or in the forest.

The Asiwaju of Ifira Akoko, Chief Boboye Ojomo, described the late Aluko as hardworking, adding that he would be sorely missed in the community.
