The police have arraigned a hotel driver, Dibang Emmanuel, for allegedly stealing two air conditioners worth N200, 000 from a hotel.

The suspect was said to have committed the crime on September 23, 2018, on Gbasemo Street, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Emmanuel, who was a driver in the hotel, was sacked over the theft.

It was learnt that he was sacked because the hotel suspected that he had stolen other valuable items in the company.

It was alleged that Emmanuel broke into the company’s warehouse and stole the air conditioners with the help of one of the security men, identified only as Yemi.

The hotel manager, Mr Adediwura Adetunji, was said to have ordered his arrest, after which he was handed over to the police.

The manager, in his statement to the police, said, “When we found out that a generator part and two air conditioners were missing, we questioned the security men. They mentioned Emmanuel. We then got him arrested.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that Emmanuel had asked a trader to pick the items where he kept them.

When the trader was caught, he was said to have confessed that Emmanuel sent him to take them.

Emmanuel, in his statement to the police, said the hotel terminated his appointment because of the missing air conditioners.

He said, “But the air conditioners were no longer in use. Whenever the company decided to change any appliance, such as air conditioner, the management usually ordered that the unusable ones be kept outside because the store was full. So, I sold the condemned appliances to an Hausa trader.

“I called the trader to take the two unserviceable air conditioners and I informed him that I would sell them for N15,000 each, which he agreed to.”

Emmanuel was arraigned before Candide Johnson Court House, Ikorodu, on two counts.

The charges read, “That you, Dibang Emmanuel, and others at large, on September 23, on Gbasemo Street, Ikorodu, in the Ikorodu Magisterial District, did conspire together among yourselves to commit felony, to wit; stealing, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

“That you, Dibang Emmanuel, and others at large, on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal two unserviceable Samsung air conditioner valued at N200,000, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, W.B. Balogun, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till November 8, 2018.
