25-Year-Old Tailor Dies In Custody.

  
Mohammed Bashir, a 25-year-old tailor, has died while in Police custody.

The incident happened at Sengere Police Outpost, under the Kofare Divisional Office, in Yola, Adamawa State.

Mustapha Atiku Ribadu, a relation of the deceased said that Bashir was brutalised to death in the hands of a Police officer, simply identified as 'Kaka', for refusing to confess to a crime.

According to Ribadu, "The 25-year-old Muhammed Bashir was taken to the said police outpost on Friday, August 10, 2018. He was arrested based on the suspicion that he bought some stolen wrappers. On Saturday, when an elder brother to the suspect took food to him, he was also detained.

The next day being Sunday, a certain Police officer, popularly known as 'Kaka' descended on the duo,  beat them mercilessly to the point that Muhammed became unconscious.

"From there, he was taken to hospital (Yola specialist). When his condition didn't improve, he was then referred to FMC Yola on Wednesday, August 15, but Mohammed was still in a coma. He finally gave up (he died) in the early hours of Saturday.

"When I observed  the corpse  of late Mohammed, I found out there are serious physical injuries on him. I even took photographs of some of the injuries."

The State Police Command confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters.

DSP Habibu Mohammed Musa, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed to SaharaReporters, stating that: "Yes, I can confirm that we have received the report of the case.

"Information at our disposal indicates that on the 14th of this month, a case of house breaking and theft was reported at Sengere outpost, and the deceased was arrested in connection to receiving stolen property from that house break.

"And that he collapsed during interrogation and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately he died four days later. I can also confirm to you that the Inspector, who led the interrogation has been arrested and investigation is ongoing.

"While we await results of the autopsy,  we urge all parties, especially, relations of the deceased to remain calm, as the Police will ensure that justice is given."
