  Man charged with killing 160 owls and hawks over five yearsA bird hunter has been accused of killing 160 owls and hawks over a five year period. Frederick Corder, 53, faces federal charges of trapping and killing the predatory birds on a plantation in Marshall County, Mississippi.

Corder and another man, who cannot be named, have been charged with capturing and killing between 40 and 160 birds from October 2010 to January 2015. Using specially made metal boxes the birds were trapped to protect the quail population on the 1,800-acre Cedar Oak Plantation, WTVA TV reported.

The indictment said: ‘Corder set large metallic box style traps throughout the property for the purpose of pursuing, hunting, taking, capturing, and killing any animal that might prey on quail, specifically including birds ofprey such as hawks and owls.

‘The traps were set in a manner that specifically targeted birds of prey, including hawks and owls.’ 

Pigeons and chickens would be used as bait to lure the owls and hawks into the traps. He is charged with one count of conspiracy to capture and kill migratory birds and eight counts of killing migratory birds and if found guilty could face imprisonment. Corder will appear in federal court on January 11.
